All right! Time for current entries. Let's start with a neutral subject: The weather. *snorts* Hee! It's been ... interesting. For the 4th of July, we had rain, lots and lots of rain, and chilly temperatures. OK, flat out COLD temperatures. Definitely the oddest 4th I've ever witnessed. Thus far. Really, the weather has been decidedly UN-summer like. I actually saw a commercial the other day that said "Summer is drawing to a close." When I saw it, I was like, "What are they talking about?" But now that I've seen/felt it, I am inclined to agree. Of course, that was before I went outside today. After all that cold weather, it's surprising to walk outside and feel like you're taking a step into a sauna. The rain, which had been so cool, had turned everything here into a sopping mess. Humid, just like Texas. Ah, well...

On to the next subject! The, um, the fireworks were lovely. They actually fired them off despite the rain. Of course, they had us all herded onto a sidewalk, prevented from moving anywhere at all, and I felt distinctly unhappy. I mean, it's bad enough feeling like a lemming when you walk across the street, but when you're caged into one spot like a rat, the whole concept of freedom in America seems like a joke. *fumes* *calms down*

Today, I ... rested and then I went to Central Park and walked around. It was lots of fun and made me very happy. I absolutely love nature. I miss my animals and my home, my family more than I can say, but at least I have the parks up here. It brings me closer to everything that I have grown to cherish.

And I'm tired, have ballet tomorrow, so au revoir!

June 28
Class started at 8:00 today--some odd schedule-change that I did not know of--and I was late. Too, the subway was being a bitch; some incident on 59th. I won't say that my tardiness was OK, but as my favorite teacher, the Russian lady who says 'back' in a way that makes it sound as though there were 15 syllables in it, was teaching, I was fine. She knows my name (which is amazing in a class of 35+ boys and girls) and likes me. Besides, my balance was superb. Yay! =P *chuckles* Of course, i couldn't remember the combinations at all. (VERY tired.) Which was odd, but whatever.

Anyway, ballet and pointe were great as always. I sweat buckets. And unfortunately, I had left my sweat towel behind at the dorm--Guh!--so I had to use my jacket. After ballet and pointe, we had yoga. REALLY amazing. My arms hurt in a way you wouldn't believe. But, hey! I got to take a yoga class. Oh! And as my toe just painfully reminded me, I've cut a deep blister into my right pinkie toe with my pointe shoes. Fun, Fun! =P By the by, though, I'm definitely thinking about taking yoga classes when I get home. Mom will be thrilled. We'll have lots of fun taking yoga classes together, I think. =)

After class, I walked 4 blocks to the 14th St. subway, walked down 2 & 3/4 flights of stairs, swiped my Metro Card, walked down another flight, walked down the boarding platform, up the 2nd staircase, up two uphill concrete ramps, down another flight of steps, and caught my #1 express to 86th St. as I do everyday. One gets a bloody workout just walking to the subway! *giggles*

Then, I got home, took a shower, washed clothes, braided my hair and walked to the "lightning rod" window (so called because it has a grill over it made of lightning rod-shaped poles. Definitely a tempting target for rogue lightning bolts) and called Pat. We were to meet for lunch at the cafe close to my place. Anyway, he had just woken up, so he asked for an hour. That was cool and I went down to the lounge and watched some obscure Disney movie.

After a bit, I decided to go out in front of my dorm building and wait for Pat there. So I sat. For 30-45 minutes, listening to music; finally got a call from Pat and walked down to meet him.

Well, he was 2-3 blocks away; I was around the corner, so I got there first. Waited a bit more... Anyway, Pat comes up and we go inside the cafe. Spinach pie (it was not so good the second time around; actually, I think they put dill in it. Blegh!) and apple juice for me. Italian club and cranberry juice for Pat. Then we went to Barnes and Noble, bought Dragonfly in Amber for me and went to Starbucks about an hour and forty-five minutes spent and Barnes and Noble. This all took place in several hours, so we had time to get sufficiently hungry in between times.

After that, we walked to Riverside Park, climbed over a big rock on our hike to find a place to sit; finally found two benches down the trail in this gorgeous little grotto. Read until it began to rain; several hours at least. Went to the big rock and climbed some more. Then we went back to Barnes and Noble to read some more.

There was a man with 'adoptable' cats out front, so we stood there and petted them for awhile until the man packed everyone up and left. (Everyone being the cats.) We went inside Barnes and Noble and found wonderful little seats on the window sills overlooking Broadway. Read 'til eight-something. Went back to the cafe and got muffins and juice: Blueberry and mango-orange juice for me; banana-walnut and guava juice for Pat.

We read some more and Pat finished Son of a Witch. We talked to Auntie Wendy on the phone; she was watching Braveheart for the sixth time in her apartment on the East Side. Decided we'd go to our respective homes. I came home and listened to the Little River Band.

I am addicted to juice. I love, love, LOVE apple juice. I will drink it from now 'til forever. I also love orange juice. And cranberry juice. Probably a million different kinds of juice. In fact, there's a Jamba Juice close to me (everything is close to me here) and I should go and try something there. Might. Eventually.

Ballet class, pointe, and strength/technique were wonderful today. Lecture was not, but who cares. I'm getting stronger (although I feel weak) and I like the lady who taught class today. It would really help if my teachers wore, "Hi! I'm _____" name tags. We have to do so and I think it's only fair that we find out their names, too. =P Eh. Maybe I should just ask.

Pat and I met up at Lincoln Center today because Auntie Wendy asked us to meet her there. But she had other stuff to do, so Pat and I met at the park close to the New York Public Library. Ah! We went there, too. It was a-to the-mazing. It's the one with the colossal lions in front. And the artwork inside! The decor! The... freakin' doors. So incredible. All of it was ornate and ... just lovely. There weren't too many books, but... And seriously! What is the point of a library if there aren't any books? I mean, really. You're not supposed to bring just your books from home ... or your research... or your computer. But anyway. I digress.

The point is, I got to see a million drawings of George Washington (and he looked like a squashed plum in some of them) and some lovely paintings of the Astor family. Yes, that Astor family. Poor J.J. the IV (the one who died in the Titanic); he was really sad-looking. And, one thing: All of these people in the portraits had LIMPID eyes. Yes. Ugh. True, some of them had the kind of eyes that follow you. (Scary and awesome all at the same time.) But most of them had these great, sad, watery eyes. Limpid. ... Limpid is my word for the day. Anyway. The artwork was beautiful and I got to see a copy of the Bible that was printed on the Guttenberg printing press. Talk about the SHIZ! =P

Anyway. The park, the library, a cafe (where I had a lovely piece of spinach quiche; my lunch/dinner. Linner? Dunch?), a movie, the grocery store for juice and energy bars, home. The lounge, where I'm washing clothes and writing an LJ entry. My day in a nutshell.

25 June 2007 @ 01:24 am
I'm back and posting! Let's start with Friday, June 22.

I went to the doctor; they are a few feet--literally--from Barbara's, where Patrick is staying. Where my darling Auntie was formerly staying. She has now moved to the East Side. Blah. That means I can't see her as easily, but at least we have Central Park as a (forgive the pun) central meeting place. Anyway, I went to the doctor and he told me that I have a virus. Gave me no antibiotics, but did do some blood work. I might have anemia. *shrugs* That would explain some things, I guess.

After the doctor, we... well, what did we do? I believe that Patrick and I went to Barnes & Noble and then to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ... again. Hee! I love that movie. =) Then I went to bed.

On Saturday, June 23, Patrick stayed at Barbara's and did Breathing Techniques with a group of New Age people that Barbara knows. (And she is very New Age-y, too. Which is lovely.) And Auntie Wendy and I went to the Bronx Zoo! Ah! It was so very, very cool. We went to the World of Birds and saw toucans, these giant billed "parrots" (I call them parrots because I have absolutely no idea what they were), and other birds. Some of the bird exhibits were open, no glass or wire, but the birds stayed in because they preferred the light and comfort of their habitats to the darkness of the hall we were in. There was also this fabulous--although very sad--exhibit which showed all the birds that, to our knowledge, have become extinct. It was ... interesting, but so very sad to see all those animals that will never again fly or breathe or eat... will never again walk on this earth. =( But we also saw polar bears and grizzly bears, we saw reptiles that were ... incredible. A spitting cobra, the hooded kind, and a giant snapping turtle the size of an eighteen-wheeler's tire. We saw monkeys--oh, such adorable monkeys!--and tamarins and caimans. It was an amazing zoo and we barely scratched the surface, which means (hopefully) that we will be going back.

On the way back home, Auntie Wendy and I somehow managed to cross the George Washington Bridge and ended up in New Jersey! Ha! We were dumbfounded and drove around there for a while before we finally managed to get back to Manhattan. Then, that evening, we all went out to eat Indian food in the Upper Eastside. Yum! The sag paneer (palak paneer to you, Nistha. *chuckles and squishes*) was a little odd, but still very good. And Patrick wanted poori along with our naan. I've never had poori and it was like eating a soapapilla. Weird. =/ Then we went back home... played Spades. Auntie Wendy walked me home and I went to sleep.

Sunday, June 24. I woke up at 10:29, dressed hurriedly, brushed my teeth and dashed off to church with Auntie Wendy and Patrick. It was great. We attended a Lutheran service and had a wonderful time. The sermon was about Isaiah and then about Jesus casting the "Legion" demons out of that man across the water. We were celebrating gay pride week/Sunday, so the sermon was all about going outside your comfort zone and ministering to everyone. Very effective, but my favourite part of the service was spent exchanging smiles with this adorable little Black girl who was sitting in the pew across from us. She and her brother were so cute! =)

After the sermon, Auntie Wendy, Patrick, and I went to the City Diner and had a brunch. Patrick and I had Lumberjack (pancakes, sausage, ham, bacon, and cranberry juice) and Auntie Wendy had poached eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. We were stuffed afterward. *chuckles* Then... after that, we decided to go to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. We ended up driving there, through Herald Sq. which was PACKED, but the tours for the day were already over. So we ended up looking at the Clinton Castle, formerly the East Battery, I believe. Anyway, it was an old fort--one of the five--that protected New York from British invasion. The actual site was once an island, but was filled in with landfill over the years in order to extend Battery Park. It was... amazing. There were tons of people in Battery Park and I felt like a tourist all over again (I feel quite at home in the upper West side) but it was a great atmosphere. People were giving samba lessons on a stage in a big village green-ish place and there was a man walking around with a blue-and-gold macaw.

Well, after that, we decided to drive back to the upper west side, grab all of Auntie Wendy's things and move them to the East Side. This we did and then we went back to the upper West Side and went back to Barnes and Noble. Fun, fun, fun! We read, and then Patrick and I helped this lady named Fran (she was very old and had cataracts) with her new phone. It was great talking to her because she was so ... progressive, even though she had to be at least 70-something. =) After that, Auntie Wendy went back home and Patrick and I went to see another movie, Mr. Brooks. I cannot begin to tell you how awful that was and I caution everyone away from it. I held my ears shut and closed my eyes nearly the entire time. Anyway, after that, Patrick and I were so shaken that we decided we needed something familiar and wonderful to chase the memory of that awful movie away. So, we slipped into a late showing of Pirates and watched the last twenty minutes of the film. It was great and worked like a tonic after the horrible picture we'd seen before. =)

Then he walked me home and here I am writing on my LJ. Tomorrow I go back to classes and I'm excited about that. So, love!

Steps To Grace
21 June 2007 @ 03:14 pm

I finally have time to post to my journal because ... lo and behold, I am ill. It's not that bad, really, just a cold. Anyway, this is going to be a brief overview of what New York City has been like.

June 16
I woke up at 5:00 in order to get to Austin and the airport at 7:30-ish. It was my first time to fly, so I was really nervous. Excited, but nervous. We did have to take off our shoes at the ... oh, goodness, what's it called? The contraband-checker/conveyor belt thingy. So, thanks a lot, Nancy, for telling me to wear flip-flops. =) And, so, I had my alarm clock in my carry-on (which was VERY heavy) and the security guard stopped me for it. He also threw away my hair gel, which I didn't want anyway, so that was perfectly fine. Luckily he didn't find my toothpaste. *grins* Although I doubt he would have thrown it away. *shrugs* You never know. He also asked me my bear's name. I was like, "Um... Fuzzy?" (Which, it is, by the way.) And he goes,

"All right, well... Would you like to hold Fuzzy?" And I, of course, readily agreed. Guess he thought I had a bomb in my bear. *rolls eyes* Oh, well. The security (which is a word I keep mis-typing) really DO help and what was really ironic is that I saw a sign later on that read: 'If you slander the employees, you will be subject to search and/or fines.' Or something that that effect. Needless to say, I kept mum after that.

OK, so... the flight. The first plane I was on was only a 32 minute flight from Austin to Bush Intercontinental, Houston. It was amazing. Taxi-ing wasn't anything special. In fact, it felt more like "bump-stop-grind-schmooze along-bump-stop-travel 5 feet" and so forth. But once we got on a straight-line runway and really picked up speed, it felt like a racecar. And then, of course, when we lifted into the air. Whew! Really amazing. (And thanks to Daddy, I actually had chewing gum with me. I knew about that trick, of course, but I'd stopped chewing chewing gum and thus it was great of Dad to give me some.) =)

A short 32 minutes later, I arrived at the airport, called Nistha, Pat, Mom, and Dad, and waited around for a bit before getting on my next flight. Again, taking off was awesome, but flying--very quickly--became less and less fun. (Really boring descriptor word, but whatever.) Luckily, I wasn't sitting next to anyone and I had a window seat, so I could play my music without offending anyone. (It was loud next to the fuselage and my earphones "leak" sound, so that's why I was glad about that.) It was the craziest thing ever, watching the world sink away. Everything gets so small so quickly. The waves on the water ... don't even show up. And the land looks very ... ugly from far up in the clouds. Everything looks like patchwork, but not prety or even interesting patchwork ... just a fragment of what it actually is. Anyway, I was glad when we touched down, because long flights (about 4 hours, in my case) can get very boring.

In the end, I got to LaGuardia, called Patrick. (I was thrilled to see him, by the way. *grins*) And we went down to meet Auntie Wendy. SO many people. We got into Manhattan very easily. The traffic was less convoluted than Houston or Austin traffic (or so we thought; the weekdays showed us differently) and stopped at my dorm. I got my key; Patrick and I put my stuff in my room. It was very nice, with a bedside table, refrigerator, desk, chest of drawers, sink, closet, bunkbed, and no roommate! =) Hee! After we put my stuff in the room, Pat left and I went down to orientation. Once that was over, I went up to my room and put all my stuff away. The end. *chuckles* No, really. Then I went to bed.

The next day was Sunday, June 17, and I slept in. Then... after that. I ... oh, goodness. Oh! All of us Joffrey kids staying at the Amsterdam Residence (or the Joffrey dorm) went on a practice run to the school, which is at 10th St. and Avenue of the Americas (Av. 6) on the 2 Express train. I got my MetroCard and we looked at the studio, had an orientation, and then went back to the dorm. From there, I ... think I went to Patrick and Auntie Wendy's, which is on W. 92nd St. They are staying with a lovely lady named Barbara, who has two adorable dogs, Maggie and Charlie. I was with them for a while and then I went back home. I can walk easily to my dorm, because it's not very far away, at W. 85th St.

Then, Monday, June 18, was the start of my classes. I had ballet from 8:30-10:00. Then pointe from 10:00-11:00. Then a 15-minute break. Then I had character class from 11:15-12:30. After that, lecture on anatomy from 12:30-1:45. It was tons of fun, especially character, since I'd never taken a character class before. After classes, I went back on the subway with Miranda, my new friend from Intermediate/Advanced level. We had a great time ... and after we got back to the Dorm, we went out to Ollie's, a Chinese restaurant, with Janee and Lizzy, two other girls staying in the Dorm. Pat met me at Ollie's when the girls and I had finished eating and we went to a pizza cafe for his dinner and then to Central Park. It was lots and lots of fun.

Tuesday, June 19. More classes. Ballet, pointe, and then Ballet Technique/Strength, which was AWESOME! =) Our teacher was this great little man who had been trained in London. He had the bushiest black eyebrows ever, even though his hair was completely white. I'm going to enjoy his class. After that, Auntie Wendy and I went out to eat at the City Diner (I had a great veggie burger, though not as good as the ones at Barnaby's in Houston.) and then to Queens, where we went shopping for a rug, desk lamp, and other practical things at a Discount store. Lots of fun; I came home, put my rug on my floor, hooked up my desk lamp, then went back to Auntie Wendy's. She and Pat went to the baseball game and I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End at Loewe's on 66th St. It was awesome! Seriously. I won't spoil it for any who haven't seen it, but I will say that it's VERY sad and is much better than Dead Man's Chest. After that, I took the subway back to the Dorm and went to sleep, very tired since I had been kept up the night before by the sound of some rowdy boys and girls thudding up the stairs and the room above mine.

Wednesday, June 20. Woke up with a sore throat, but went to classes anyway. We had ballet, pointe, modern, and lecture. Lecture was about streching exercises. Modern was VERY fun. =) I went to Auntie Wendy's and crashed on her bed. She was lovely and made me chicken noodle soup, spinach pie, and ... tonic, that was it. =) Couldn't remember for a second. Then, we talked about where we wanted to visit. (Hopefully we're able to go to the Museum of Natural History soon) and then she and Maggie, the dog, walked me home. I read a bit at the Dorm and went to sleep.

Today, Thursday, June 21. I woke up, felt no better, called Joffrey Ballet and told them I would be absent, talked to Auntie Wendy. Went back to sleep. Woke up; ate two oranges, read a bit. Finally took a shower at about 2:00, came down here to the Lounge, checked my email, wrote this LJ post, and... yeah. That's it. So, I'm really tired right now and about to either watch TV or walk over to Auntie Wendy's. Hopefully will have more interesting posts in the future.

Just talked to Cathy Thomas and she told me I am getting a roommate. Drat! Makes me mad... Oh, well. C'est la vis. Au revoir, everyone!
